U.S. News used six performance measures to assess schools. Those measures include student achievement on state-required assessments, graduation rates and college readiness. The rankings also take into account how well schools serve underserved students, along with participation and performance on Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate exams.

U.S. News also considered curriculum breadth and overall student outcomes in its ranking process. The methodology points to a broad review of academic performance and access, rather than relying on a single test score or one benchmark. That means schools were measured across several areas tied to student progress, academic opportunity and preparation for college-level work.
