EVANSTON, IL — Three young men were shot in the area of Howard Street and Custer Avenue on the Chicago-Evanston border Thursday afternoon, police said. The men were riding in a red SUV on Custer when they were struck by gunfire around 3 p.m., police said. All three suffered non-life threatening gunshot wounds and were expected to survive after the SUV crashed into a pole.
The victims were taken to St. Francis Hospital, where they were in various conditions, ranging from good to critical, according to Cmdr. Ryan Glew. Their precise ages and residences were not immediately known, but police are investigating it as a gang-related shooting.
Glew said the men, all of whom were known to police from previous interactions, were believed to have been targeted with a rifle of an undetermined type.
