Kitchen Fire at The Mather Put Out by Sprinklers

A stove burner that was left on caused a blaze on the ninth floor of the retirement community in Evanston.

EVANSTON, IL - A stove top burner that was left on and ignited a basket of goods on a countertop caused a late Tuesday morning fire at The Mather retirement community in Evanston.

Firefighters in Evanston responded to a kitchen fire on the ninth floor of the building at 425 Davis St. at 11:37 a.m., according to a news release from the Evanston Fire Department.

The fire was kept in check by the building's sprinklers before firefighters ventilated the apartment space and assisted with clean up.
