Kiwanis Club of Evanston Continues to Honor ETHS Students

each month the Kiwanis Club of Evanston honors scholars from ETHS who have also excelled in athletics, community service or fine arts

Three outstanding scholar athletes from Evanston Township High School were honored recently by the Kiwanis Club of Evanston with the Ted Van Zelst Award. The three were introduced by Chris Livatino, Director of Athletics at ETHS and a member of the club. They included Chyna Wright, Bowling, Hilary Vickman, Gymnastics and Sean McGuire, Swimming.

Chyna recently broke a school record by rolling a 285, the highest ever recorded by an ETHS student. She is currently weighing several school options. Hilary is captain of the Girl Gymnastics team and has found the mental aspects of the sport as challenging as the vault and other exercises. She will attend Indiana University. Sean will attend the University of Michigan. He has made it a priority to get to know the younger swimmers on the team because he feels that interaction with all the team members is beneficial. Each of the students credited athletics with shaping their identity, providing discipline to excel in the classroom and in their sport and strong friendships.

The Van Zelst award honors the late Ted Van Zelst, an outstanding Evanston businessman, entrepreneur, humanitarian and art collector. Winners receive a certificate of recognition, a book on leadership and a $25 gift certificate to Barnes & Noble. The club began the program in 2007 and has honored over 200 standout students in athletics, community service and fine arts since its inception.
