Kiwanis Honors Community Service Stars from ETHS

ETHS Community Services Stars Honored by Kiwanis Club

Three Community Service standouts from Evanston Township High School were recently honored by the Kiwanis Club of Evanston for their community and academic achievements.

The students, introduced by ETHS Community Service Coordinator, Mary Collins, were Tim Brewer, Avery Gross and Abby Hansen. Tim Brewer has been helping special needs kids since the 7th grade when two classmates were introduced into his classes. Tim, who will attend Tulane next year, is a member of Best Buddies and has worked with Special Recreation programs. He is currently involved in Have Dreams. All these programs address students with special needs. He is also on the ETHS Lacrosse team.

Avery Gross is involved with in Ambassadors which helps new students and their families become acclimated to ETHS. He also is involved with Emerge and Restorative Justice which works with students for positive solutions rather than standard detentions. Avery is also a McGaw YMCA Achiever. He is undecided as to his college next year but hopes he can continue to be a facilitator for friendship at the high school.

The third honoree is Abby Hanson who spends 8-10 hours a week at the Evanston Animal Shelter. She counsels prospective ‘parents’ for the animals and matches each animal to the lifestyle of their new owner. She, too, is a member of Ambassadors.

The students, accompanied by their parents, received the Ted Van Zelst Award which celebrates ETHS students in athletics, fine arts and community service. Begun in 2007, the club has honored over 200 students.
