Medical Pot To Be Taxed in Evanston, Paving Way for Maple Avenue Dispensary
City council introduces ordinance allowing Pharmacann LLC to open dispensary in Maple Avenue garage.

The city of Evanston is one step closer to having a medical marijuana dispensary.
Alderman there gave final approval Monday night to a 6 percent tax of the cultivation of medical cannabis as part of the consent agenda during the night’s city council meeting, according to Evanston Now. They also introduced an ordinance expected to be approved at the next meeting leasing a storefront in the city’s Maple Avenue garage for a marijuana dispensary.
Paul Zalmezak of the city’s economic development staff calmed any worries regarding the liability the city could face if the state’s test of the medical marijuana program is not extended past the end of 2017 by pointing out that Pharmacann LLC - the winner of the state license to operate in the area - would have a lease terminating at the same time and would need to pay for all improvements to the storefront if the program is not extended.
