Memorial Day 2018: What's Open, Closed In Evanston

EVANSTON, IL — Memorial Day weekend combines the unofficial kickoff to summer with a chance to honor those veterans of the armed forces, including those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in service of the United States. Since the tradition began to commemorate those who died in the Civil War, the federal holiday has evolved into a time for cookouts, parades and weekend getaways.
Here's what's open, closed and going on in Evanston on Memorial Day 2018:
Lake Michigan Beaches
Evanston's public beaches open for the season Memorial Day weekend. The five locations are open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. A daily pass or season beach token is required for those over one year old. Free or discounted tokens are available to qualified residents.

Ceremony At Patriots Park
Evanston American Legion Post 42 is hosting a community reflection and ceremony on Memorial Day to honor America's fallen heroes at Patriots Part, at Sheridan Road and Davis Street, from 10 a.m. to noon on May 28.
Government Buildings

- The Evanston Public Library will be closed Sunday and Monday.
- Non-essential public employees will have the day off.
- Postal service will not be available.
Transportation
- Free holiday parking will be in effect at downtown parking garages.
- CTA will run on a weekend schedule, and Metra will begin offering free rides to children through Labor Day.
Business
- Most supermarkets will be open, though some, like Costco, give their employees the day off.
- Many retailers offer special Memorial Day sales and deals for veterans.
Services
- No rubbish or recycling collection will take place Monday. All trash, yard waste and recyclables will be picked up one day later than normal. Condo recycling collection will occur on June 1.
- The Evanston 311 service will be unavailable during the holiday.
