Mission Impossible: Read 2 Books By Fyodor Dostoevsky
The Evanston Public Library's reading challenge returns for an 8th year.

From Evanston Public Library: The Evanston Public Library has a mission for ambitious readers. On September 12, Mission Impossible, a community book discussion group that features challenging books, kicks off for the eighth year, to read two masterpieces by Fyodor Dostoevsky: The Brothers Karamazov and Crime and Punishment. On Tuesday, September 12 at 7 pm, Mission Impossible veterans and new recruits alike are invited to a Kick-off Extravaganza in the Community Meeting Room of EPL’s Main Library. The mission kick-off features Dr. Gary Saul Morson – the Lawrence B. Dumas Professor of the Arts and Humanities at Northwestern University who specializes in the work of Dostoevsky and teaches NU’s popular course “The Wisdom of the Brothers Karamazov.” After Dr. Morson briefs attendees on all things Dostoevsky, in-person registration will take place for a discussion group. Starting September 13, readers can also register online or by calling (847) 448-8620.
Regular discussion meetings for MI:8 will begin mid-October and run through June at various locations including EPL’s Main Library, the Celtic Knot, Bookends & Beginnings, and EPL’s North Branch. Please visit our Discussion Groups page for the dates, times, locations, and leaders of all our small groups. Each group is facilitated by EPL staff who provide discussion questions prior to each meeting. Supplementary programs including film screenings and lectures that take place throughout the year.
Visit https://missionimpossibledostoevsky.wordpress.com/ for our reading schedule and info on the discussion groups. Copies of The Brothers Karamazov and Crime & Punishment will be available in limited quantities at the RA Desk on the 2nd floor of the Main Library.
Russell Johnson, EPL Adult Services Librarian, welcomes readers to the challenge: "The goal for Mission Impossible is to help readers check the "big" books off their reading bucket lists by offering guidance, camaraderie, group support, and a good time. Over the years we've welcomed retirees, working professionals, college students, married couples, teachers current and retired. Really all kinds of folks ages 20 to 90."
In years past, readers have tackled War and Peace, Ulysses, Flannery O’Connor, Proust, Middlemarch, Moby-Dick and Don Quixote. That’s seven missions accepted and seven missions accomplished. But make no mistake, our literary adventures are far from through, and retirement is not an option. Whether you’ve joined us before or you're a new recruit, it’s time to get your bookmarks ready because Mission Impossible: Dostoevsky is about to begin.
