Music Institute of Chicago Welcomes Pinchas Zukerman

Acclaimed musician and educator performs with Trio, leads free master class, receives Dushkin Award

In May, the Music Institute of Chicago welcomes acclaimed violinist, violist, conductor, and educator Pinchas Zukerman to perform, conduct a master class, and receive the Music Institute’s Dushkin Award at its 2018 Anniversary Gala.

Concluding the Music Institute’s 2017–18 Faculty & Guest Artist Series, the Zukerman Trio—violinist Pinchas Zukerman, cellist Amanda Forsyth, and pianist Angela Cheng—performs a concertMay 20 at 3 p.m. at Nichols Concert Hall. The program features Beethoven’s Piano Trio in B-flat, WoO 39 “Allegretto”; Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No. 2 in E minor; and Dvořák’s Piano Trio in E minor, Op. 90 “Dumky.” Officially launching in 2013, the Trio has performed in Japan, China, Australia, Spain, Italy, France, Hungary, South Africa, Istanbul, and Russia and throughout the United States.

The Zukerman Trio performs Sunday, May 20 at 3 p.m. at Nichols Concert Hall, 1490 Chicago Ave., Evanston. Regular tickets are $30 for adults, $20 for seniors, and $10 for students; $50 for premiere seating; and $250 for a limited number of VIP tickets that include a post-performance event onstage with the artists. On Monday, May 21 at 11 a.m.,Zukermanconducts a master classwith Music Institute students, including violinists Julian Rhee and Hannah White from the Music Institute’s Academy for gifted pre-college musicians; the Kairos String Quartet, consisting of Academy students Julian Rhee (violin/viola), Joshua Brown (violin/viola), Thompson Wang (violin), and Lydia Rhea (cello); and Christian Kim (violin) from the Music Institute’s Community Music School. This is Zukerman’s third master class with Music Institute students. The Music Institute has invited local students and faculty participating in their high school orchestra programs.

The master class takes place Monday, May 21 at 11 a.m. at Nichols Concert Hall, 1490 Chicago Avenue, Evanston, and is free and open to the public (recommended for ages 12 and older). For more information, visit musicinst.org/zukerman-class

That evening, Zukerman is a guest of honor at the Music Institute of Chicago’s 2018 Anniversary Gala, receiving the prestigious Dushkin Award. Named for the Music Institute’s visionary founders, Dorothy and David Dushkin, the award recognizes international luminaries in the world of music for their contributions to the art form, as well as to the education of youth. The evening also features a cocktail reception, dinner, performances by Music Institute students, and the presentation of the Cultural Visionary Award for Chicago to Frederick H. Waddell, chairman, Northern Trust, and the Richard D. Colburn Award for Teaching Excellence to Music Institute clarinet and saxophone faculty Stanley Davis.

The Music Institute’s 2018 Anniversary Gala takes place Monday, May 21 at 5:30 p.m. at the Fairmont Hotel Chicago, 200 N. Columbus Drive in Chicago. Born in Tel Aviv in 1948, Pinchas Zukerman—violinist, violist, conductor, pedagogue, and chamber musician—has remained a phenomenon in the world of classical music for more than four decades. The 2017–18 season marks his ninth as principal guest conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and his third as the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra’s artist-in-residence. His enthusiasm for teaching has resulted in innovative programs in London, New York, China, Israel, and Ottawa. He chairs the Pinchas Zukerman Performance Program at the Manhattan School of Music, where he pioneered the use of distance-learning technology in the arts more than two decades ago.
