New Evanston Target Opens On Sherman
A small-format Target store in Sherman Plaza is open for business in downtown Evanston.

EVANSTON, IL — A new Target store is open in Sherman Plaza in downtown Evanston. The 1616 Sherman Ave. location is Target's ninth small format location in the Chicago area. Located near the Northwestern University campus, the new Evanston store promises to curate its merchandise for students and staff of the university, as well as commuters, residents and employees.
The company said its smaller stores have goods tailored to meet the specific needs of local areas.
The 27,400-square-foot new Evanston store includes organic produce, "easy meal solutions," health and beauty products, dorm and apartment essentials, apparel and accessories for women and men, technology and entertainment accessories, a selection of toys and sporting goods and a CVS Pharmacy.

There are 26 guest parking spaces reserved in the Sherman Plaza parking garage, and parking is free there for up to an hour.
The small-format stores aim to reach customers near college campuses and in dense urban areas and suburban neighborhoods who would not otherwise shop at Target. There is another, full-sized Target store in Evanston at 2209 Howard St.

The Minneapolis-based company announced it would provide a total of $6,000 in grants this month to local nonprofit groups – Youth Job Center, Arts Encounter, Meals at Home, and YWCA/Evanston North Shore – to mark the store's opening.
Target said it plans to employ about 70 people at the Sherman Avenue store.
As part of a multiyear strategy announced Tuesday, it said it has raised its minimum hourly wage to $12, as part of a plan to increase pay to $15 an hour by the end of 2020.
A grand opening event is scheduled for Sunday at 8 a.m. The first 1,000 store customers will receive complimentary reusable bags.
