North Shore Obituary: John A. McGuire, Jr.

John played briefly for the Chicago Bears and was the nephew of the first Catholic Mayor of Chicago.

John A. McGuire, Jr. died peacefully with his beloved wife Dr. Marilyn S. Johnson by his side on Tuesday, September 29, 2015, at Greystone Equestrian, their home in Elburn, IL, after a valiant battle with cancer.

John McGuire was born December 15, 1942 to Carlotta Lagorio and John A. McGuire in Chicago, attended Saints Faith Hope and Charity School in Winnetka, Loyola Academy in Wilmette, the University of Colorado, and Syracuse University.

From there he played professional football with the Chicago Bears for a brief time. During his business career he was a trader at the Chicago Board of Trade and then he became a real estate agent in the greater Chicago area. Throughout life he remained an avid horseman, enjoying fox hunting with the Wayne-DuPage Hunt, and participating in both eventing and dressage competitions.

His great-uncle, John P. Hopkins, was the first Catholic Mayor of the City of Chicago in 1893. In addition, his paternal grandmother, Francis McCormick McGuire, helped found Misericordia in 1921 and the family has remained involved there over the years.

Survivors include; his wife Dr. Marilyn S. Johnson; his brother Patrick McGuire, of Vancouver, BC; his sister, Marcia McGuire, of Gurnee, IL; his niece, Kyle Marie McIntyre of Santa Monica, CA; his stepmother Paulette McKinney McGuire of Chicago, IL; and his aunt, Julia (the late John) Dowdle of Wilmette, IL.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Carlotta Lagorio Hirsch; his father, John A. McGuire; his sisters, Irene McGuire and Carlotta McGuire; his brother, Michael McGuire; his uncles and aunts, John and Mary Elizabeth Henebry; George and Frances Rassas; John and Josephine Dwyer; Robert and Patricia Dwyer; and Walter and Selina McGuire.

Funeral services will be private with interment at Calvary Cemetery in Evanston.
