Northwestern Student's Death Ruled Suicide By Alcohol, Drugs

20-year-old Kenzie Krogh died from a combination of prescription drugs and drinking, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

EVANSTON, IL — The death of a Northwestern student who died earlier this year was a suicide caused by a combination of alcohol and antidepressants, according to the Cook County medical examiner. Kenzie Krogh, a 20-year-old junior from Durham, North Carolina died on Feb. 25 at Evanston Saint Francis Hospital, nearly 24 hours after her friends took her to the hospital.

A toxicology report determined the cause of death was the "combined drug toxicity" from bupropion (Wellbutrin), fluoxetine (Prozac) and alcohol, said medical examiner's spokesperson Becky Schlikerman. The manner of death was ruled to be suicide.

Evanston Police Cmdr. Ryan Glew said the department is likely to wrap up its death investigation shortly after it obtains a copy of the official report.

Krogh studied the application of sociology to business at Northwestern's school of education and social policy. She was a teaching assistant for a course taught by faculty of the Kellogg School of Management, according to a statement from the University's dean.

The Dean's List student was also a research assistant with the schools Relationships and Motivation Lab, friends told the Daily Northwestern. Krogh had been a member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority but left before her death.

Krogh would be "remembered with love, laughter, and joy as we remain thankful to have had her love and presence in our lives." her family's statement said. "Integrity, justice and an incredibly hard work ethic were some of the most important ideals Kenzie lived by."

The death came about 13 months after the suicide of another 20-year-old Northwestern student. Jordan Hankins, a sophomore basketball player and Indianapolis native, was found dead in her dorm room in January 2017.
