Northwestern Students Robbed Overnight

One of the students was targeted while riding the CTA Purple Line and the other was talking on his cellphone on campus.

EVANSTON, IL - A 21-year-old Northwestern University student was robbed by three men overnight Friday morning on Noyes Street.

Three black men described as being 16-19 years old, 5'7" - 6'0" tall and wearing hooded sweatshirts approached the victim while he was talking on his cellphone near Noyes and Sheridan Road, according to a police report. One of the men asked the victim to use his cellphone and when he refused, one of the subjects the phone and the victim's wallet, which contained $20 and a debit card.

The victim was then instructed to provide the robbers with his ATM pin and accompany them to the nearest ATM, which was near the Noyes Street CTA station. There, the three withdrew $400 from the victim's account before returning the phone and wallet.

The offenders then proceeded onto the platform at the train station.

In what may have been a related case, another similar robbery attempt was reported in the area just before this one.

Another 21-year-old Northwestern student was riding the CTA Purple Line northbound when a man approached him and demanded his cellphone and wallet. When the victim refused, another man came over and demanded $20. After the victim refused again, the train stopped at the Noyes Street station. Both the victim and suspects exited the train, with the suspects fleeing eastbound on foot without any proceeds.

Descriptions of the suspects in both cases are identical. One of the suspects was wearing headphones during both robberies.
