Owner of ‘The Fish Keg’ on Howard Street Dies

Theodore Hansen owned the popular Howard Street spot for years.

CHICAGO, IL - The neon sign is unmistakable to anyone who has driven down Howard Street over the last few decades.

‘The Fish Keg’ has become a Chicago institution, but popular among residents of Evanston and Skokie as well due to its longtime location on Chicago’s border near both North Shore suburbs.

Theodore G. Hansen, the longtime owner of the landmark fish stop in Rogers Park, died on Oct. 24. He was 87.

Hansen was a veteran of the Korean War, and returned to Chicago upon honorable discharge to become a co-owner of ‘The Fish Keg,’ which opened in 1951.

Soon later, he became the sole owner as the business at 2233 W. Howard continued to grow in popularity.
In addition to serving as a longtime owner of a famous Chicago restaurant, Hansen was a staple in the community.

He served as president of the Howard Street Chamber of Commerce and was an active participant in community development. He was an Evanston resident and an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.

Hansen was happily married to his wife, Charlotte for 63 years.
