Proposed Requirement Could Mean Less Competition for Barbers, Stylists
New salon and barber businesses would need to apply for a special use variance to operate near a competitor.

If a proposal passed by the Evanston Plan Commission on Wednesday is adopted by the City Council, existing barbershops, beauty salons and other personal service establishments will be protected from competition, Evanston Now reports.
If approved, no like business would be allowed to open within 500 feet of an existing one without going through the lengthy special use process, which requires the approval of the City Council.
Those businesses already within the proposed separation of another would be grandfathered in and not have to re-apply.

The original proposal was to have the separation at 1,000 feet - but the Commission agreed that that was unfeasible.
