Rabid Bat Found In Evanston: Health Officials

Making sure your pet is protected can help protect the human population as well.

EVANSTON, IL — A bat found in Evanston has tested positive for rabies, according to city officials. Lab testing by the Illinois Department of Public Health determined a bat found Thursday in the 1400 block of Davis Street was rabid, the Cook County Department of Animal and Rabies Control confirmed.

"The most significant measure people can take is to ensure that their pet’s vaccinations are up to date," said Ike Ogbo, Evanston's interim health and human services department director. "Not only does the vaccine protect the pet, it also serves as a barrier of protection for people."

It was the first bat to test positive for rabies in Evanston so far this year. Last year, 26 of the 79 rabid bats found statewide were in Cook County — 13 in Chicago and 13 in the suburbs.
