Racist Chant Sung By OKlahoma Fraternity Learned at Event Planned by Headquarters in Evanston

University president says it was brought back to local chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon.

The now infamous racist chant sung by members of the University of Oklahoma chapter of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity likely originated at a national leadership cruise hosted by SAE’s national headquarters in Evanston, the Daily Northwestern and others report.

“That chant was learned and brought back to the local chapter,” OU President David Boren said at a news conference Friday. “Over time, the chant was formalized by the local chapter and was taught to pledges as part of the formal and informal pledgeship process.”

Northwestern’s chapter of SAE released a statement when the video first surfaced, calling it “appalling” and “unacceptable.”
