Racist, Homophobic Slurs Found in Northwestern Chapel; 2 Students Charged

EVANSTON, IL - Two freshmen at Northwestern University have admitted to spray-painting racist and homophobic messages inside the Alice Millar Chapel on campus.

Surveillance video captured the footage of Anthony Morales, 19 and Matthew Kafker, 18 going inside the nondenominational chapel early Friday morning. A discovery later that day showed a building riddled with graffiti, including expletives against African-Americans and homosexuals, a swastika and the name ‘Trump.’ The two were charged with institutional vandalism, hate crime to a place of worship and criminal damage to property and held on $50,000 bail, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The damage also included spray-painted penises in several places around the church, one which was placed above the word “God” in a hallway and lines spray-painted over photos of Muslim students. In all, about $300 worth of damage was caused.

“These allegations are disgusting to me,” a judge said.
