Student Struck By Car At Low Speed Outside Haven Middle School
A student suffered minor leg injuries after he stepped into traffic and was hit by a driver in a school zone, authorities said.

EVANSTON, IL — A middle school student suffered minor injuries after he was struck by a van in a school zone Thursday in Evanston. The driver was unable to stop in time after the 13-year-old stepped into traffic outside Haven Middle School, authorities said.
Around 8 a.m., police and paramedics were called to the 1800 block of Lincoln Avenue, west of Green Bay Road, where a Haven Middle School student had just been hit in the leg by a passing van, according to police and fire officials.
The student remained able to walk after being struck him, and he was taken to an area hospital for treatment for injuries to his knee and shin, according to Fire Chief Brian Scott. He said it appeared the driver had been going very slowly before striking, given the extent of morning traffic in the school zone and the nature of the his injuries.

Evanston police determined the driver of the van was not at fault and did not issue any citations in connection with the incident, according to Cmdr. Ryan Glew. As the 13-year-old got out of the car, he stepped into traffic and was hit by the passing van as it tried to stop.
"The Evanston Police Department would like to remind everybody around schools at drop-off time — whether your're dropping off or driving through — to exercise extra caution," Glew said.
