‘Suburb That Killed the Car’ To Improve Its Parking Lots

So maybe Evanston does care about its drivers.

EVANSTON, IL - Paving operations will take place at three city parking lots over the next six weeks, according to a city memo.

Work on the James Park West parking lot will begin on Oct. 3 and be complete by Oct. 21. The lot will be completely closed to the public for much of this time.

The Parking Lot #32 in the 800 block of Hinman Avenue will see a reconstruction of the pavement beginning on Oct. 10. It will be complete by Nov. 4 if the schedule holds. This lot will be completely closed during the work.

The parking lot at police headquarters, 1454 Elmwood Ave., will also be improved. Work here will start on Oct. 10 and continue through Oct. 21. The lot is expected to be completely closed to traffic for five days during the two-week period.

The work on the parking lots will help offset semi-serious rumors the city is trying to become the first to be carless.

Pavement project surely mean city officials plan on having cars here for quite awhile.

In 2015, national publication Politico dubbed Evanston as the “suburb that killed the car” in reference to the growing number of transit-oriented developments occurring in the city and the city’s high walkability rating.
