Support the Newberry Consort At Lieder Recital March 17

Support the Newberry Consort at a fundraiser at the Charles Gates Dawes House in Evanston featuring music by Mozart, Beethoven and more.

The Newberry Consort is pleased to present a Liederabend, an intimate recital and reception with soprano Ellen Hargis and fortepianist Charles Metz. They will perform music by Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven and Schubert on March 17 at 3 p.m. at the Charles Gates Dawes House, a 19th-century mansion and National Historic Landmark in Evanston. Tickets are $100. Proceeds will go toward supporting the Consort’s upcoming season.

The concert will include classics of the Lieder repertoire, including Haydn's pastoral English songs along with his F Major piano sonata; some of Schubert's best-loved songs, including "Das Lied Im Grünen" and other favorites; Mozart’s famed “Nine Variations on Lison Dormait”; and Beethoven’s “Für Elise.” In the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day, several of Beethoven’s charming Irish songs will also be performed.

In between musical pieces, guests are welcome to explore the beautiful interior of the Dawes House and enjoy an assortment of hors d'oeuvres and beverages.

The recital also marks the Chicago début of Metz' new instrument, a Viennese fortepiano based on those built by Anton Walter, who originally built pianos for Mozart and Beethoven. This replica, built by Paul McNulty, is decorated in the Empire style, with matchbook veneered mahogany and Egyptian gilded ornamentation from circa 1810. Its distinct sound and array of colors and effects brings this classic repertoire to life in a way not possible on a modern instrument.

Don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime chance to attend a 19th-century salon right here in Chicagoland!
