Sustain Evanston Grant Program Now Accepting Applications for Local Organizations

Local businesses, nonprofits, and public buildings can apply for grants up to $25,000 to support sustainable practices.

EVANSTON, IL — The application period for the Sustain Evanston Grant Program is now open.

The funding program aims to assist local businesses, nonprofits, and public buildings in adopting sustainable practices that support the City’s Climate Action & Resilience Plan (CARP). The program seeks to reduce operating costs for organizations and enhance their capacity to provide eco-friendly solutions to the community.

Organizations in Evanston can now apply for grants of up to $25,000 to finance sustainability initiatives. Funding is limited and will be granted on a rolling basis. Organizations that applied in previous years and did not receive the full $25,000 are encouraged to reapply.

Changes have been made to the program this year due to decreased funding. Most funds will be directed toward buildings covered by the Healthy Buildings Ordinance (HBO), with some funds also allocated to waste projects. HBO building projects should focus on energy efficiency or electrification.

Examples of building projects include audits to improve energy efficiency, door, window, or insulation improvements. The adoption of all-electric and Energy Star appliances, such as heat pumps, refrigerators, and induction cooktops are also eligible. Waste project examples include the integration of composting or recycling services and the implementation of reusable takeout containers.

Businesses applying for building improvements must first check if their property or business is covered by the Healthy Buildings Ordinance. Applicants must also complete a free ComEd facility assessment. An assessment completed within the last three years is acceptable. After these steps, businesses can then apply for the Sustain Evanston grant.
