Thanksgiving 2017: What's Open, Closed In Evanston

Find out mall and grocery store hours, trash pickup schedules and what businesses will be closed for Thursday's holiday.

EVANSTON, IL — This Thanksgiving and Black Friday promise to be some of the busiest travel days this year. Whether you're in town for a visit or a longtime resident, it's helpful to know which places are extending hours like never before, and which are taking a step back to enjoy "turkey day" apart from the retail frenzy. Here's a list of public services, institutions, retailers and restaurant hours for Thanksgiving 2017.

Post Office: Post offices are closed on Thanksgiving, but will resume operations on Friday.

Evanston Public Libraries: Closed on Thanksgiving.

Garbage Collection: No collections will occur on Thanksgiving. Thursday's trash, yard waste and recycling collections will be picked up the following day, while Friday's condo recycling collections will occur on Saturday.

Banks: Most major banks are closed on Thanksgiving Day, and most will open on Friday. Call your branch to verify.

Schools: Evanston/Skokie District 65 schools will be closed Nov. 22 -24. Evanston Township High School will also be closed Nov. 22 - 24.

Facilities: There will be no 311 service, and the Morton Civic Center will be closed Nov. 23 through 26. The Robert Crown Center will be closed Nov. 23. The Chandler-Newberger Center, Fleetwood-Jourdain Community Center, Gibbs-Morrison Center, Levy Senior Center and Noyes Cultural Arts Center will all be closed Nov. 23 and 24. The Evanston Ecology Center will be closed Nov. 23 through 26.

Parking: Thanksgiving is a City of Evanston parking holiday. There will be free evening and weekend parking in downtown self-park garages and select business district parking lots starting Thursday, Nov. 23 through Monday, Jan. 1.

Retailers: A couple of blogs dedicated to Black Friday deals say 72 retailers will be closed on Thanksgiving Day. Outlets planning on taking the holiday off include: Abt Electronics, Ace Hardware, Barnes & Noble, Costco, Home Depot, Neiman Marcus, Marshalls, Nordstrom and T.J. Maxx. National retailers that are expected to remain open on Thanksgiving include Best Buy, Kohl's, Macy's, Sears, Walgreens and Walmart. Target says it will close at midnight on Thanksgiving, then reopen at 6 a.m. Black Friday morning. Bennison's Bakery will be open regular hours Wednesday and 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday. It asked customers to order any Thanksgiving items at least 24 hours in advance.

Lincolnwood Town Center will be open from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. and again from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Thanksgiving and Black Friday.

Northbrook Court's holiday hours run from 6 p.m. to midnight on Thanksgiving and from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Black Friday.

Westfield Old Orchard Shopping Center's Thanksgiving hours also run 6 p.m. to midnight. On Black Friday it is scheduled to open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

  • Aldi: Closed
  • D&D Finer Foods, 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. (Black Friday, 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.)
  • Jewel-Osco, Chicago & Greenleaf, 6 a.m. - 7 p.m. (Pharmacy Closed)
  • Jewel Osco, Howard & McCormick, open 24 hours (Pharmacy open 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.)
  • Trader Joe's: Closed.
  • Valli Produce, Dempster & Dodge, 7 a.m. - 2 p.m., (Black Friday, 7 a.m. - 7 p.m.)
  • Whole Foods Markets, 8 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Flying Turkey 5K: Looking to burn some calories instead of accumulating them? Check of the Evanston Flying Turkey, a certified 5k run and walk along the Evanston lakefront starting at Sheridan Road and Church Street. Some of the proceeds will go toward the Harvest Food Pantry and Foundation 65. Participants are encouraged to bring canned food to donate. Evanston asked the public to watch out for detours and traffic control from the intersection of Sheridan and Church to Milburn Street on the north. Sheridan Road, Lincoln Street and Milburn Street will be affected.
