Traffic Stop Leads To Pot, Gun Charges For Evanston Man

An Evanston man ran a stop sign, police say, prompting a traffic stop. When police smelled pot, they searched his car.

EVANSTON, IL — Evanston police arrested a man on weapons and drug charges Friday night after stopping a car for running a stop sign. Police said in a release they stopped Samuel Thomas, 25 at 9:52 p.m. Friday.

When police pulled Thomas over in the 300 block of Ridge Avenue, they smelled unburnt cannabis in the car, they said in the release.

They searched Thomas' car and found a Springfield .45 caliber handgun which was loaded. They also found about a quarter pound of cannabis in the car.

Thomas, of Brummel Street in Evanston, was arrested and charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, delivery of cannabis (one felony and one misdemeanor) and disobeying a stop sign.
