Veterans Honored Here: The Merion Celebrates Our Heroes
Soprano, Diana Stoic kicks off the celebration of veterans in a patriotic musical program.

The Merion celebrates veterans on Tuesday, November 10 and Wednesday, November 11 with a series of programs to honor those who have served their country in all branches of the armed forces. The kick-off event will be a musical program of patriotic songs sung by Diana Stoic, with keyboard interludes by pianist Barbara Falk. Included will be familiar favorites like George M. Cohan’s “I’m a Yankee Doodle Dandy” and Irving Berlin’s “God Bless America” as well as other all-American patriotic standards.
On hand before the concert will be a representative from the Veterans Administration. Charley Blunt, M.A., Social Worker with the Evanston Veteran’s Center will offer an informational presentation to highlight several of the various programs, services and benefits offered by the Administration. He will also provide information about how veterans and their families can learn more about these services.
The celebration continues on Wednesday, November 11 with a Veteran’s Day flag ceremony at 11 am followed by a special luncheon menu featuring red-white-and-blue plate specials priced from $8-$10. At 2 pm we will have a matinee showing of the documentary film “Honor Flight – One Last Mission” which tells the heartwarming story of our living World War II veterans and a Midwest community coming together to give them the trip of a lifetime. Volunteers race against the clock to fly thousands of WWII veterans to Washington, DC to see the memorial constructed for them nearly 60 years after their epic struggle. The screening event will honor Merion resident, Irving Lerner, who participated in an “Honor Flight” trip in recent years.
