Why You Should Care About Palliative Care

Journeycare's Dr. Martha Twaddle to discuss how palliative care can address gaps in our health care system

North Shore Village presents a Lunch & Learn event with Dr. Martha Twaddle, a national leader in palliative medicine and how it can address gaps in our health care system. Dr. Twaddle, Senior Vice President of Medical Excellence and Innovation at JourneyCare, will discuss: how palliative care differs from hospice; how palliative medicine can improve quality of life and ease the caregiver’s burden; how to make sure physicians and family members understand and honor your wishes.

Also: JourneyCare will provide complimentary copies of The Five Wishes, the most widely used guide for documenting one’s choices for end of life care. The Merion, an independent senior living community, will offer tours of its model apartments. Bookends & Beginnings, Evanston’s newest independent bookstore, will have copies of Dr. Atul Gawande’s Being Mortal for sale. Dr. Gawande’s sensitive discourse on medicine and what matters at the end of life has been on the best-seller lists for more than a year.

North Shore Village is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit community-based organization connecting older adults to services and support to help them stay in their own homes as they age. Founded eight years ago by residents of Evanston and Wilmette, NSV currently has about 350 members in Evanston, Glenview, Northbrook, Northfield, Wilmette, Winnetka and Skokie. The Village has been supported since its inception by Mather LifeWays through its Community Initiatives division.

JourneyCare is the new combined organization of Horizon Hospice & Palliative Care, JourneyCare, and Midwest Palliative & Hospice CareCenter. The three organizations came together in 2015 to provide greater services to more patients and families across 10 counties in the Chicago area and northern Illinois.
