EVANSTON, IL - Evanston police have a 44-year-old woman in custody as a “person of interest” in the explosion that went off in a women’s bathroom Wednesday at the Target store in the city.

Police responded to the store in the 2200 block of Howard Street at 4:18 p.m. to a report of an explosion in the women’s bathroom. They said it appears to have started through a plastic-bottle device left in one of the stalls.

Target became part of a national controversy recently when the retail giant announced a policy allowing customers to use the restroom that corresponds to their gender identity, but police say this incident does not appear to be “related to any policies that the Target store has in place.”

The woman has not been arrested, and police are looking for other possible suspects.
