Workshop On Masculinity At Evanston Library
The interactive workshop aims to explore toxic masculinity and to re-envision masculinity.

EPL: In this time of the #MeToo movement and expanding viewpoints on gender, the very idea of what it means to be a man or manly is under scrutiny. Dr. Ada Cheng, storyteller and former tenured DePaul University sociology professor, welcomes this discussion. On the evening of Wednesday, September 25, she will lead an interactive event entitled “Re-Envisioning Masculinity: An Interactive Workshop and Conversation about Toxic Masculinity.” The event will include mini-presentations, critical dialogues, and video clips.
Topics will include: What is toxic masculinity? Why is it important to examine it under the current sociopolitical climate? Where does it all start and how does it manifest itself? How does it affect all of us? How can individual and collective changes take place?
Dr. Cheng was a tenured professor at DePaul University for 15 years from 2001 to 2016 when she resigned to pursue storytelling and performance full time. During her time at DePaul, she taught subjects including: gender, sex, sexuality, masculinity, race/ethnicity, and immigration. She is currently the Education and Outreach Specialist with Campus Advocacy Network at the Women's Leadership and Resource Center at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). Ada hosts Pour One Out, a monthly storytelling series at Volumes Bookcafe. She is also the producer and host of the storytelling show Am I Man Enough?, where people tell personal stories to critically examine the culture of toxic masculinity and the construction of masculinity and manhood.
The Re-envisioning Masculinity workshop and conversation takes place on Wednesday, September 25, from 7:00 to 8:30 pm in the Community Meeting Room at the Main Library, 1703 Orrington. All are welcome, and registration is not required.
