Yellowbrick in Evanston Launches Clinical Trials of New Way to Treat PTSD

Yellowbrick to host clinical trials of a non-invasive technique called deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation to treat PTSD.

EVANSTON, Ill.—Have you ever experienced a severe, life-changing trauma such as a car accident, violence, sexual assault or sexual abuse? Do you have psychiatric symptoms due to the trauma?

If so, you may be eligible to participate in a series of clinical trials at Yellowbrick, a mental health treatment center in Evanston. Yellowbrick is conducting trials of a non-invasive technique called deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (dTMS), which is used for the treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Deep TMS is already an established treatment for major depressive disorder based on a strong track record of safety and efficacy,” said Dr. Laura Viner, associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine and director of research at Yellowbrick. “We are excited to see how deep TMS also can help those who have been affected by trauma.”

Deep TMS uses a brief magnetic pulses, similar to those used in MRI machines, around a patient’s head to stimulate neurons in deep areas of the brain. The technology was developed in 2001, and the FDA allowed Brainsway, the manufacturer of the dTMS equipment, to treat adults suffering from brain disorders such as depression since 2013.

As part of the trial, participants will receive either an actual or a sham treatment for three times a week for four weeks, as well as two follow-up assessment sessions. Participants will be compensated for their travel and for completing the assessments.
