On Tuesday morning before polls opened, Citizens for a New Central Middle School posted a message on its Facebook page, stating that at "99 years old, Central Middle School was older than penicillin."

The citizens group initiated an information campaign to get the referendum passed, included parents of current and past students, educators and empty-nesters.

Tim Scanlon, chair of the citizens group, said the power of a grassroots movement cannot be overstated.

"Evergreen Park citizens did tonight what they have been doing for generations, they stood up and supported EP," Scanlon said. "With approval of this referendum, our community can now replace a 100-year-old facility and prepare an educational space for our students and our future."
