Crack Found Hidden In Steering Wheel Cover: Cops

Evergreen Park police arrest an Oak Lawn man after they find crack beneath his steering wheel cover, prosecutor said.

EVERGREEN PARK, IL -- A driver stopped for a traffic violation was arrested after police found crack hidden in the steering wheel cover of his vehicle, prosecutors said. Shane McGregor, 28, of Oak Lawn, appeared before Cook County Judge Michael Kane on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance.

According to the charges, Evergreen Park police were on patrol around 4:34 p.m. Aug. 8 in the 9400 block of South Western Avenue, when they pulled over a driver, later identified as MacGregor, for improper lane use. The front seat passenger is also alleged to have thrown a crack pipe out the window. Officers searched MacGregor’s car where they found crack cocaine hidden in the steering wheel cover, the prosecutor said. MacGregor allegedly admitted to purchasing the crack in Chicago for $10.

The assistant public defender asked the judge to consider an I-bond. “This is not a violent offense,” he said.

“I don’t consider the use of narcotics to be non-violent because of the violence to bring them here,” Kane said.

Bail was set at $2,500. MacGregor’s next court date is Aug. 30 in Bridgeview.
