Cubs trade Evergreen Park native Gorzelanny

Former Marist pitching star Tom Gorzelanny has been traded by the Cubs to the Washington Nationals for three prospects.

The trade was expected after the Cubs landed pitcher Matt Garza last month.

According to MLB.com, the Cubs sent the left-handed starter to the Nationals for three Minor Leaguers -- 22-year-old outfielder Michael Burgess, 24-year-old right-hander A.J. Morris and 20-year-old lefty Graham Hicks.

The Cubs have not commented on the deal.

Gorzelanny, who will turn 29 next season, is expected to join the Nationals rotation and may become the team's No. 1 starter.

According to MLB.com, last season Gorzelanny went 7-9 with a 4.09 ERA and struck out 119 in 136 1/3 innings. He finished his time in Chicago with an 11-11 record and a 4.43 ERA in 42 appearances.

He was a standout while a student at Marist High School. After graduating, Gorzelanny played junior college ball at Triton College after starting his college career at the University of Kansas. In 2002, he played for the St. Cloud River Bats. He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the second round of the 2003 baseball draft with the 45th overall pick.

Gorzelanny had been drafted in the 38th round in 2000 by the White Sox, but never signed with the team.
