Drawing Students Learn About Synesthesia In STEAM Activity At EPCHS

Students in Mrs. McArthur's class listened to their favorite music and drew what kind of patterns and colors came to mind.

EVERGREEN PARK, IL - Drawing students in Mrs. Libby McArthur's class at Evergreen Park Community High School learned about Color/Sound Synesthesia, then followed it up with a drawing activity, during their first week back at school for the 2022-2023 school year.

This activity asked them to listen to their own music and imagine what they would see if they had color sound synesthesia.

About 4 percent of the people on Earth experience a mysterious phenomenon called synesthesia: They hear a sound and automatically see a color; or, they read a certain word, and a specific hue enters their mind's eye.

Students listened to their favorite music and drew what kind of patterns and colors came to mind. The drawings were made upright on paper mounted on newsprint to the walls of the hall by the art department.

"I am really proud that they dove into this assignment head first, with little prep!," McArthur said.
