EVERGREEN PARK, IL – Evergreen Park Community High School has added an E-sports team, as students now have the opportunity to represent the school against others in competitive gaming.

E-sports, which includes Smash Brothers, Rocket League, 2K and other video games, is a newly sanctioned Illinois High School Association (IHSA) activity for the 2021-2022 school year. The EPCHS team will compete in a variety of tournaments from February through April, faculty sponsor Dan Truffa said.

“We’ve had unsanctioned tournaments here in the past, but this year it is a brand new IHSA event,” Truffa said.

A group of students took part in the club’s first informational meeting in late January, and future EPCHS students, including any 6th, 7th, or 8th grader living in Evergreen Park, are invited to learn more at the “Future Mustang Game Night” planned for Tuesday, February 1 from 5-6:30 p.m.

Truffa said about 15 students will be on the EPCHS team this year, with eight participating in the April sectionals. The club is expected to participate in its first tournament on Saturday, February 12 at Oak Lawn.
