EP Recreation Prepares For Summer Events

Day Camps, Concerts, Fireworks. . .oh, and a parade.

Day Campers have fun at the park
Day Campers have fun at the park (Village of Evergreen Park)

With schools now headed for completion this Spring/Summer, the Evergreen Park Recreation Department stands ready to provide resident children with a safe, fun, active place to spend a few weeks over summer vacation.

The Department’s Summer Day Camp program has been a popular one for decades and they are putting the final touches on the 2023 edition.

The Preschool and Mini Day Camps are filling up quickly, but there are plenty of spots available for the eight-week Full Day Camp, which begins on Monday, June 12, which is being held this year at the building formerly known as Jacob’s Well, 3450 W. Maple Street.

Youngsters in this camp can swim twice a week, make art and craft projects, participate in indoor/outdoor games and enjoy many special event days, including some field trips. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, parents can pick their child up at Evergreen Park High School, 9901 S. Kedzie, as those are the two swim days.

The camp is open to Evergreen Park residents only who are entering first grade through sixth grade. All campers should bring their own lunch and wear comfortable play clothes. Sunscreen is a must! The camp runs for eight weeks at a cost of $1,000 (which works out to less than $5 per hour).

Parents can register their child at the Community Center; easier than that is the online registration portal. A current report card from any Evergreen Park elementary school must be provided. If you register online, we ask that you bring a copy of that report card to Parent Night on Monday, June 5.

Our Director and Supervisors are certified teachers and all counselors are high school graduates who are either in college or college-bound.

CONCERTS IN THE PARK and MORE
A long-standing tradition continues this summer at historic Klein Park (Circle Park), as the Free Summer Concerts in the Park begin on Sunday, June 11 at 6pm with “The StingRays”, featuring the greatest rock and roll ever written. The concert series continues through the summer, culminating in a wonderful evening of music by the City Lights Orchestra at 5pm on Monday, September 4 at James J. Sexton Park, 91st and Rockwell, along with a fabulous fireworks display at dusk as we wave goodbye to summer in Evergreen Park.

And, of course, there is a little thing known as the Evergreen Park Independence Day Parade and Fireworks, which is coming on Friday, June 30.

The Recreation Department would love to showcase our local community groups and programs, so please consider entering the parade!

If you have any questions at all, just drop in to the Recreation Department or give them a call at (708) 229-3373. Our full summer program book is available online, or hard copies can be found at the Community Center, where we would love to say hello to you, our neighbors.

Over the years, expansion has occurred and continues; through change and adaptation, as well as keeping to the tried and true values, the Recreation Department strives to include all and appeal to all in our diverse community.
