EVERGREEN PARK, IL — The Evergreen Park Community High School baseball team unveiled their new throwback uniforms last week during media day. The 1920s-era uniforms pay homage to the Kansas City Monarchs, the legendary Negro League franchise that played from 1920 to 1965.

EPCHS head baseball coach Andrew Massey said the idea came from watching his brother, Kansas City Royals second baseman Michael Massey, wear them a few times at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City last season.

"As a player I always loved the look of the uniforms of that era of baseball whether it was the KC Monarchs, the Homestead Greys, or the early 1900s White Sox," Coach Massey said.

The Monarchs were one of the most successful baseball teams of all time, winning ten league pennants and two Negro League World Series championships in their history. The team featured numerous notable players over the years, including Hall of Famers Satchel Paige, Jackie Robinson, Hilton Smith, Willard Brown, Ernie Banks, and Buck O’Neil.

The Mustangs will wear these uniforms only at home, and as often as possible.
