EPCHS Counselor Participates in U.S. Marine Educators Workshop

Ms. Eileen Durkin traveled to the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego and learned what it takes to make a Marine.

Ms. Eileen Durkin, Counselor at Evergreen Park Community High School, recently participated in the U.S. Marine Corps Educators Workshop. During the week of March 4, she traveled to the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego and learned what it takes to make a Marine.

While there, Ms. Durkin had the opportunity to step inside the first 15 minutes of boot camp. She learned about the core values and expeditionary mindset, and had the opportunity to meet with new Marines for a one on one conversation about their experiences. She also toured Camp Pendleton and Camp Miramar, participated in the physical training assessment and the team building portion of the Crucible, and completed the obstacle course and range.

“Post high school planning is an important part of any school counselor’s job. I love my job and am always seeking new information to share with my students! I was fortunate to be selected to attend the San Diego Educator Workshop where I participated in a variety of activities that enabled me to gain a deeper insight into the benefits of the career of a Marine and the experiences candidates endure. The Marines offer a variety of career options and training, including accounting, carpentry, meteorology, musicians and more.” said Ms. Durkin.
