EPCHS Mathletes Excel At Regional, 7 Headed For IHSA State Finals

EVERGREEN PARK, IL – The Mathletes from Evergreen Park Community High School placed second out of 11 schools at the Regional Math Contest held at EPCHS on Feb. 25. In addition, several students and teams from EPCHS have qualified for the IHSA State Math Contest that will be held in April.

Seniors Jackie Jones and Helen Joyce both qualified for state as individuals after placing first and second, respectively, in Pre-Calculus. Jones and David Ortiz also qualified as oralists, as did the calculator team of Lilli Gleason, Jack Schaller, Owen Doogan and Saanvi Patel.

"We are so proud of the team's accomplishments this year and look forward to capping off a great year at the state contest in April," EPCHS Mathletes faculty sponsors Maria Vinci and Brian English said in a statement.

EPCHS saw regional first place finishes from the calculator team and the oralists, who gave their presentation on functions.

The seven state-bound Mathletes will compete in the State Math Contest on Saturday, April 22 and be recognized with a “clap out” event EPCHS holds for all students who qualify for the state rounds in athletics and activities.

Other highlights from the EPCHS regional include Zachary Barnes, Evergreen Park’s only competing freshman, who single-handedly placed third in the Freshman Algebra 1 team event.

The sophomore geometry team of Gleason, Schaller and Luke O’Malley and the junior Algebra 2 team of Doogan, Patel, Quetzel Estrada, Thomas Jarosz-Gobby, Alex Martinez and Rachel Thomas both placed second.

The senior Pre-Calculus team of Jones, Joyce and Ortiz who placed second, the freshman-sophomore 8-person team that competed with only four members (Barnes, Gleason, O’Malley and Schaller) and placed second;

The junior/senior 8-person team that competed with only seven members (Doogan, Jarisz-Gobby, Patel, Thomas, Jones, Joyce and Ortiz) and placed second and the freshman/sophomore 2-person team of Barnes and O’Malley also placed second.
