St. Bernadette to Host South Side Theology on Tap

St. Bernadette Parish in Evergreen Park will host South Side Theology on Tap for the next four Sundays in July.

South Side Theology on Tap made its first appearance two years ago, when four parishes worked together to present young adults in their communities with a way to discuss their faith.

This year, St. Bernadette, along with the support of parishes from Beverly to Hickory Hills, will host the four-week conversation series and invite young adults from across the South Side to participate.

Held at parishes and universities throughout the world, Theology on Tap began in the Chicago area in 1981. The idea came from Office of Young Adult Ministry director Father John Cusick, who is still actively participating in Theology on Tap sessions throughout the country.

He recently commented on why he started Theology on Tap. “What gets me nervous is that every generation appears to be more secular than the same age group one generation ahead of them, and that’s sort of alarming. Everybody keeps saying, ‘The young adults are the future of the Church.’ No, they’re not. They are the present Church.”

Theology on Tap brings those college-aged and in their 20s and 30s into dialogue with questions about faith and meaning. Married or single, living at home or starting a home of their own, this time of life is exciting for many. Those in college begin to think about career opportunities and hone their professional and academic skills. Those working continue to build their expertise and personal dignity. Yet school and careers are not ends in themselves. They often open up more questions than they answer.
