EVERGREEN PARK, IL - Students in Tom Minarik's 'Ceramics, Sculpture and Jewelry' class (C.S.J.) at Evergreen Park Community High School created new glass pendants using a microwave as part of their jewelry unit this week.

The project is a STEAM activity, which have become more common as the advances in education focus on the connections between all subjects.

Minarik said the students were able to see how a microwave, traditionally used to heat food, is able to heat up to 1,500 degrees to melt glass. The special kiln traps the microwave's heat, creating enough heat to melt the glass.
