Northeast Students Campaign for Student Council Offices
Student council candidates pitch platforms to fellow classmates.

The students of Northeast School were encouraged to vote during this very important election season. Three prestigious Student Council seats were up for grabs. The objective of a Student Council is to prepare students for civic responsibility. This student based extracurricular organization is designed to promote school spirit and leadership among students. Voting was open to Northeast 3rd-5th graders, but only the 5th grade class were eligible for the officer positions opened.
There were five candidates on the election ballot: Jack Hughes and Michael Shannon were running for office of student council president, Ashley Richter and Samantha Ricks ran for office of vice president, and Janiyah Brown was the lone candidate running for secretary.
Northeast students blanketed the gymnasium floor and actively listened as each candidate delivered their well-crafted speech filled with ideas on ways to improve the school climate. The most popular were adding rides to their year-end carnival and increasing the number of school celebrations throughout the year.

“I can’t make any promises though,” said vice-president candidate Samantha Ricks.
Unlike the nation's presidential candidatse, these fabulous five were smiling and encouraging each other before and after their speeches. It was a tight race but after the ballots were counted, the people had spoken: Jack Hughes was elected student council president, Ashley Richter won the vice-president's seat and Janiya Brown was elected secrtary.
