In March 1944, representatives from the Evergreen Park Women’s Club, the First United Methodist Church of Evergreen Park, and the Evergreen Park Dist. 124 PTA gathered at Central School to discuss establishing a library. At that time Central, a K-8 school, didn’t have a school library. The group organized a Mardi Gras in the school gymnasium, featuring a fish pond, children’s games, hot dogs and other refreshments. The fundraiser raised $800, which was used to buy supplies for the library. The Evergreen Park Village Board donated a building behind village hall that had been built by FDR’s Works Progress Administration. With a generous donation of books from the Chicago Public Library Lawn branch, and a generous bookseller in downtown Chicago, the Evergreen Park library opened its doors on Sept. 7, 1944.
