EVERGREEN PARK, IL -- After chairing dozens Evergreen Park Independence Day parades the great Dennis Duffy is retiring as commissioner and director of the village’s recreation department. Duffy will be grand marshal of this year’s “Third of July” parade.

Duffy, a former teacher at Brother Rice High School and graduate, has served as the director of Evergreen Park Recreation Department since 1980. Duffy took over the position after the passing of his father, Martin Duffy, who served as director from 1970 to 1980, and for whom Duffy Park is named.

Affectionately known as “Duff,” Dennis has served the Village of Evergreen Park in many venues. He was, as the children fondly recall him, the "principal of the preschool." He created and served many of the rec department events with incredible enthusiasm, including punt-pass-and-kick, the track meets, Halloween and Easter happenings, and began the holiday Santa visits for the families of Evergreen Park.

Under Duffy’s guidance, the recreation department’s “Day In The Park” celebrated its 31st year this past Saturday. Duffy will serve as the grand marshal of the 2019 Independence Day Parade (the 51st!), which he chaired for many years.

Duffy’s colleagues will miss him and his unique humor, but are happy for him to enjoy golfing, traveling and his beautiful grandchildren.
