Gallery Show At Moraine Valley Reuses Recyclable Materials

PALOS HILLS, IL -- An art exhibition focusing on recyclable materials is on display through Dec. 15, in the Robert F. DeCaprio Art Gallery at Moraine Valley Community College. Artist Toby Zallman’s exhibition features sculptures, paintings and drawings that center on her inspirations—the more recent being plastic bags. For more than 13 years, Zallman has used some form of recycled materials for the basis of her pieces.

“Their usefulness belies the damage they wreak on the environment,” Zallman said. “The bags have a skin-like feel to them, and I am intrigued by the way the bags can be transformed and have layers of content added.”

Zallman, who holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Tyler School of Art of Temple University in Pennsylvania, has participated in group exhibitions at the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art in Chicago, the Koehnline Museum of Art at Oakton Community College in Des Plaines, the Illinois State Museum at the Thompson Center in Chicago, the Evanston Art Center, the College of Saint Benedict Galleries in Minnesota, the Flatfile Gallery in Chicago, and others. She also was commissioned to complete four large-scale pieces for a 40-foot wall at the National Boulevard Bank in Chicago.

Located in Moraine Valley’s Fine and Performing Arts Center, the art gallery is open for viewing Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and during most Fine and Performing Arts Center performances. For more information, call the Box Office at (708) 974-5500.
