Special Olympics Athletes Compete In Basketball Drills Sunday AT EPCHS

The Special Olympics Illinois Region E basketball skills competition returns to Evergreen Park Community High School on Sunday, Jan. 21.

EVERGREEN PARK, IL — Evergreen Park Community High School will host a basketball skills competition Sunday, Jan. 21, for local athletes participating in Special Olympics Illinois. The event will take place in the main gym at EPCHS, 9901 S. Kedzie Ave.

Athletes from SOILL Region E will be competing in dribbling, shooting, passing and other skill drills. EPCHS has hosted this event for several years under the direction of math teacher Rob Novak.

Novak started volunteering for Special Olympics in 1989 when he was a college student at Southern Illinois University. Many Evergreen Park basketball players, service club and National Honor Society members have since stepped up to volunteer regularly.

“The kids really take to it,” Novak said. “It’s always a good experience for them.”

Admission to the skills competition is free. Concessions will be available. Medals will be awarded for each event.
