Adding Insult to Injury, Judge Tells Man Who Shot Himself 'You're a Fool'
Kendrick Hegwood didn't understand why police arrested him after he shot himself.

A Chicago man who shot himself in the foot was judged “a fool” Sunday in Cook County court.
Kendrick Hegwood, 31, of the Austin community, was trying to uncock his handgun when the weapon fired, striking him in the foot at about 11 p.m. Saturday. After police responded to the 911 call, they arrested Hegwood.
“Why am I arrested for shooting myself?” Hegwood asked.

He was charged with reckless discharge of a firearm and while standing on crutches appeared before Judge Adam Bourgeois.
“You’re a fool!” Bourgeois said. “That bullet could have gone through a window and hit an innocent person. ... You kill yourself, that’s your own business.”

Bail was set at $100,000.
