Genealogy Workshop the Oak Park Arms

Genealogist Daniel Kane of Oak Park will help participants get started in the process of identifying their family tree.

A genealogy workshop will be held from 2 – 3:30 p.m., Friday, April 8, at the Oak Park Arms retirement community, 408 S. Oak Park Ave. Genealogist Daniel J. Kane of Oak Park will help participants get started in the process of identifying their family tree.

Genealogy is the study of one’s family by tracing lineages and history to determine kinship and pedigree of family members. This can be done a number of ways including oral interviews, historical records and genetic analysis.

Among genealogists, it is understood that most seniors carry with them a library full of family lore than has never been written down or recorded. Although each individual has his or her own motivation for studying family history, there is often a desire for people to carve out a place for their family in a larger historical picture and to preserve the past for future generations.

In 1989 he joined the Chicago Genealogical Society and discovered the joy of research at the Newberry Library. Despite not becoming “serious” about his research until his mid 30s, Kane considers himself among the fortunate genealogists who got an early start.
