Going Camping? Forest Park Shop Offers Unique Gear

The Military and Police Supply on Madison Street has military-manufactured bug spray, tiny survival kits and more things you might want before heading into the woods.

The Military & Police Supply in Forest Park isn't just for soldiers and cops. So if you're going camping this summer, it's a good place to stop in—you can get some items designed for and by the military to stay safe on your trip.

Located at 7351 Madison St., the store offers a large selection of camping gear so good it's the only stuff the military uses. Much of it wouldn't be found in other stores such as Walmart or Dick's Sporting Goods, according to store staff.

I stopped in last week and was told about a few items that would be good to carry along on any camping trip:

1. Compass: Duh. The pictured LED-lit compass is just $12, but there are others featured in the store, including an official military tritium lensatic compass. See more here

2. Mosquito net: Although the mosquitos haven't been terrible this summer, it's always a good item to carry.

3. Survival kit: In a can! This kit, which is about the size of a tuna can, holds a whopping 38 items. That includes fish line, a soup packet, nails, a pencil and much more.

4. Insect repellant: But not just any little bug spray. This is the "Army type," manufactured by the military for its use. I wouldn't want to be those insects.

There's countless other items, including tents, sleeping bags, cookware and more.
