"Successful students need their parents to be invested in their education," said Mr. Daniel Adams, president of the Board of Education. "Through ‘Bring Your Parents to School,’ parents can learn more about what their students’ day is like at school, and learn how they can help their students be even more successful."

"Bring Your Parents to School Day" has been a tradition in District 209 since 2002, when it was first introduced by then-Board of Education President, Mrs. Theresa L. Kelly. The initiative recently became law at all schools across the state of Illinois as well. On August 10 at the annual Bud Billiken Parade and Picnic in Chicago, Governor Pat Quinn signed legislation that allows all school districts in Illinois to designate the first Monday in October as "Bring Your Parents to School Day." The bill was sponsored by state Representative Chris Welch, a former District 209 Board of Education president, and state Senator Kimberly Lightford, a former Proviso East graduate.

"We want our ‘Bring Your Parents to School Day’ to be a model," said Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart, superintendent of District 209. "We are proud that our District was at the forefront of such a significant effort. We encourage all parents to visit and learn about their students’ day at school. Parental involvement is critical to our students’ performance, and we want more parents to come into the schools throughout the day and continue to be active and engaged throughout the year."

Mrs. Kelly encouraged anyone connected to District 209 to take part in "Bring Your Parents to School Day."

"Any opportunity to encourage the parents to participate in their children's education is a positive for education," Mrs. Kelly said. "I welcome all stakeholders taking an active part in our children's future."

Doors open for "Bring Your Parents to School Day" at Proviso East, Proviso West, and PMSA at 7:50 a.m. on Tuesday, October 1. We look forward to seeing you there!
