Thief Picked Up with 40-Inch TV Sticking out of his Trunk: Police Blotter

MONDAY, DEC. 31

Warrant Arrest

Louis C. Deamon, 51, of Chicago was arrested on an outstanding warrant out of Chicago for failing to appear in court on a charge of retail theft, police said. He was apprehended at Thorntons #18, 601 S. Harlem Ave.

SUNDAY, DEC. 30

Vagrancy

Kenny F. Schwake, 49, of Forest Park was cited under a local ordinance for soliciting contribution on the roadway, police said. Schwake was displaying a cardboard sign, "Homeless Hungry Please Help, Thank You and God Bless Police," while he walked up and down on a roadway on the off-ramp of First Avenue and the Eisenhower Expy. when police picked him up.

Weed, Booze Found in DUI Arrest

Ivan R. Diggs, 33, of Maywood was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after his car was pulled over at Washington Boulevard and Park Avenue in River Forest, police said. A policeman on patrol curbed a car after it was having difficulty trouble traveling in a straight line. The officer smelled a strong odor of alcohol coming from the car and on the driver, who also appeared to have blood-shot eyes. A strong odor of marijuana also was coming from the car.

Recovered from in between the front seats of the 1998 Mercury was a small zip-lock bag containing a green leafy substance that field tested positive for .5 grams of cannabis. A half-empty bottle of Remy Martin Cognac and a plastic cup containing the same beverage also were found in the car. Diggs failed field sobriety tests; a breathalyzer test indicated his blood alcohol was well above the legal limit.

Transportation of Open Liquor

Gerald N. Thompson, 51, of Forest Park was cited under a local ordinance for transporting open liquor after an officer saw him drinking from an open bottle of Colt 45 malt liquor in the area of Beloit Avenue and Jackson Boulevard, police said.

An office was dispatched to the area on a report that a man, later identified as Thompson, was yelling at himself. When the officer approached him, Thompson attempted to spill out what was left in the bottle, police said. Thompson told the officer he wasn't yelling at himself, rather he was yelling at someone on the phone from his earpiece. Thompson was advised to keep his voice down while walking.

FRIDAY, DEC. 28

Car Burglary

A bag of dirty clothes, a vehicle insurance card and an O'Hare Airport identification card were stolen from a 2007 Ford Escape parked in the 7200 block of Madison Street.

THURSDAY, DEC. 27

Retail Theft

Alfred Haynes, 56, of Chicago was cited under a local ordinance for retail theft after he stuffed a bottle of E&J Brandy into his shirt and fled Suburban Liquors, 7612 Madison St., police said. He later was apprehended a few blocks away at Ferdinand Avenue and Adams Street. Police also warned him he would be arrested if he returned to the liquor store.

Driving on a Suspended License

Preston J. Temple, 30, of Hillside was charged with driving on a suspended license after a traffic stop in the 600 block of Harlem Avenue, police said.

WEDNESDAY, DEC. 26

Driving Without a License

Jamal J. Jones, 25, of Maywood was charged with driving without a license and improper use of registration after a traffic accident in the area of Harlem Avenue and Madison Street, police said. Jones told police that his license had expired and he provided the officer at the scene with a state identification card. The license had expired in 2008. The registration that Jones had in his possession belonged to a Chevrolet and not for the 1999 Ford Taurus he was driving, police said.

MONDAY, DEC. 24

Deceptive Practices

Two counterfeit $20-bills were used to pay for food at Subway, 1215 Harlem Ave.

SUNDAY, DEC. 23

DUI

Antonio E. Armstrong, 34, of Chicago was charged with aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol and other offenses after a traffic accident in the area of Des Plaines Avenue and Harrison Street, police said. Police noticed that Armstrong's speech was slurred and he smelled of alcohol.

Police asked Armstrong if he had been drinking and he told police he had just drunk a 40 ounces of Old English Malt Liquor. He failed sobriety tests at the scene and was taken into custody. In custody, he refused to take a breathalyzer. He also was charged with driving without a license, driving without insurance, leaving the scene of an accident and failing to give information or render aid. 

Residential Burglary

An Xbox game system and a Playstation gaming console were stolen from a home in the 400 block of Elgin Avenue. Entry to the building was gained by forcing open the side entry door; force was also used to gain entry into the apartment.

SATURDAY, DEC. 22

Theft

Packages containing a cell phone and a Coach purse were stolen from the front porch of a building in the 7500 block of Harrison St. Estimated loss was $275.

Retail Theft

Paris A. Govan, 18, of Bolingbrook was charged with felony retail theft after he was pulled over at Taylor Street and Troost Avenue for stealing a $428 television set from Walmart, 1300 Des Plaines Ave., police said. A security guard notified police that a man, later identified as Govan, placed the set inside of the trunk of his car and fled on to Roosevelt Road; he also told police that the set was sticking out of the trunk of his car.

An officer saw a 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier with a set sticking out of the trunk, stopped the car and took the driver into custody, police said. He told police he had planned to give the television as a gift to a friend. He also was charged with driving on a suspended license, since his was suspended for DUI, police said.

Driving without a License

Mario A. Ortiz, 24, of Berwyn was charged with driving without a license after a traffic accident in the 7200 block of Roosevelt Road, police said. 

Retail Theft

OShawn H. Henderson, 19, of Chicago was charged with retail theft for taking three iPhones from Kmart, 1300 Des Plaines Ave., police said. Police said Henderson had sold the phones for a total of $600 and with some of the proceeds he bought the coat he was wearing at the time of his arrest, police said.
